Rangers of the North
The Hoarwell is a 480 miles long river, rising from the north of the Misty Mountains, about a hundred miles from Rivendell, passing through the Ettenmoors and the Trollshaws. After passing beneath the Last Bridge on the East-West Road it joins with the Bruinen and then merges with the Glanduin into the Gwathló.
The river’s Mannish name was Hoarwell, a free translation of the Elvish Mitheithel. The Elvish name for the river contains the components mith ‘grey’ and eithel ‘spring, well’.
The Mitheithel’s current is too swift for most craft to navigate, and too powerful and cold to ford easily. It has a diameter of about one hundred feet and crests white in many places. It is altogether incapable of being crossed between the Iant Methed and Fennas Drunin, where it widens and deepens. During the spring months the waters are especially violent as ice from the mountains of Angmar melts and flows south. Jagged rocks sticking up through the rivers surface make any travel by boat suicidal.
