Rangers of the North
|Minor Personal Goals|
- Do The Right Thing
Feredir has a strong, personal code by which he sets what he construes as right before his own, personal motivations. This could mean taking a harder path than simply walking away, giving someone else the credit for a task because he thinks they deserve it, and keeping his own part in activities played-down because he sees it as improper to further himself. Of course, this more often than not leaves him with less credit than is due, but if there is such a thing as karma, he might get his due in the end. Or maybe not. At any rate, he does not do good things in the hopes of good things coming to him, but because he thinks it is Right.
- Explore more of Eriador
Although one of Feredir’s ultimate goals is to return to the North Downs and Nirmolian, he is absolutely besotten with traveling and exploring Eriador. He loves the land, and feels a kinship with nature, and would not be content until he knew every holt, vale or down personally. His 18-month Ranging prior to “taking the Green” was one of the happiest times of his life, marred only by the fact that he couldn’t share it with anyone. Now he has a band of brothers with which to enjoy the trekking more fully, and absolutely loves it. Especially after he managed to convince Jack Fleetfoot to map their progress, every new region visited makes him feel more in tune with Eriador.
- Fulfill duties to the Rangers
The tenets of the Rangers are fairly diffuse, except for two, central points: Protect the Line of Isildur, and the people of Eriador. Beyond that the Rangers go where they please for the most part, often not communicating for weeks, or even months. This is an impossible goal to actually achieve, because of its scope, but that doesn’t mean that Feredir is any less driven towards it.
- Fulfill duties to the People of Eriador
Feredir sees it as his duty to help those who need it, even if they don’t want to be helped. If it is the Right Thing to Do, he will sacrifice what must to protect and help those in need. This is not a naïve, self-destructing drive; Feredir realizes that sometimes the Greater Good must prevail. But even so, if he can do something to do good by someone, he will. Every time he changes life for the better for someone, however insignificant they may be, he accomplishes this ongoing Minor Goal.
- Make decent Rangers out of Salabon and Baran
This is a pet project that Feredir is quite proud of, and will often set small tasks or trials for his two companions whilst trekking. His main pedagogic method is to teach by example, and that is for the most part how he goes about this objective. Especially tracking and stalking are skills he wishes to impart onto his friends, laying snares or clues in the wild and seeing how long it takes them to find him. He is also trying to impart on the two city boys the importance of caring for nature, to take only what is needed, and be harmonic with the wild. Every rank Salabon or Baran gains in Outdoor*Environmental, Tracking-related skills, and Subterfuge*Stealth is a small victory in this quest.
- Present the treasures gained from Adventuring to the Rangers in Rivendell
Feredir is actually quite anxious to travel to Rivendell to present the spoils of his adventures to Helvorn to help further the Cause. The longer he stays away, there is always a chance that it could have been of use but weren’t there. He was quite distraught at having to go back to Fennas Drúnin instead of taking Bragol, Beoraborn and Baran to Rivendell.
- Learn magic
His father, who imposed on him the ban from learning magic, is dead. Feredir secretly wishes to learn magic, mainly nature- and hunting-related magics, but dare not for respect for his father. Feredir needs to learn that the tragic end of his mother was not due to her magic-use to get over his ban, although he will grab any opportunity to learn what he can and feel terribly guilty about it afterwards. Only when he learns the truth will his guilt be abolished. As such, this can be seen as both a Minor and a Major Goal (see below). Another requirement in this Goal, provided he sees an opportunity and grabs it, guilt be damned, is to find someone who can actually teach him. As such, this is at least a two-fold Goal.
- Prove himself to the Rangers/prove Agarwaen wrong
Having been humiliated without grounds Feredir feels a strong urge to prove that he is as capable a Ranger as he actually is. He doesn’t realize that it is only himself, and Agarwaen, who look down on him, and strives towards proving himself in their eyes. In some ways he’s actually an overachiever, but that is because he has the wrong impression about his situation, and allows Agarwaen to continue to put him down, even though his rival doesn’t actually have any formal authority over him. This goal will be achieved if he receives acclaim amongst his brethren, but the only Rangers he has seen since he left Helvorn at Rivendell have been Agarwaen and Isig. He even missed the Rangers who aided at the Siege of Harnalda, and as such has no idea whatsoever what kind of reputation he has among his own. In fact, the longer he fails to meet up with other Rangers, the more poignant this Goal becomes.
- Reconcile with Isig
Feredir is completely unaware of Isig’s involvement in his mother’s death, and doesn’t know that Isig resents Feredir because he feels such strong guilt every time he sees him. Feredir thinks that he has disappointed the older Ranger, whom he has so long looked up to, and believes the fault to be in himself. As such, he strives to prove himself to Isig perhaps more than to the Rangers in general. This Goal can only be achieved by learning the truth and then confronting Isig with it.
- Go home (to Nirmolian) as a Ranger charged with patrolling the North Downs and Hills of Evendim
Feredir has not been to Nirmolian since he was a youngster, Ranging the Evendim Hills with his father and the Grey Company. He desperately misses it, but it holds pain in that it was where his mother died and his life ended. In addition he has yet to have had the opportunity to return. He wishes that he can one day go back there as Isig’s replacement and patrol the Hills and the North Downs with pride. This Goal does not necessarily fit in with the Campaign, but is more flavour than a realistic objective.
- Learn the history of his lineage
Feredir’s lineage is colourful and very interesting, but Feredir knows very little of it. Many others do, however, but there is pain in the memories of Tauron and Menuiel, and few speak of it, especially because they pity Feredir. More people wish him well than he could possibly know. This Goal is meant to be a sort of step-by-step achievement over time, where hopefully Feredir will glean tidbits from various people over time, until he can comprehend the grander picture.
- Reclaim something of importance from the proud history of the Dúnedain
Wouldn’t any Dúnadan hope to do something like that? Ride into Rivendell with a fabled hero’s sword, or an ancient crown from a legendary King?
- Explore the chemistry with Jayelle
Feredir is extremely reticent about romantic involvement around women, having only been besotted once, and been burned quite badly. Although he can easily be eloquent in the right setting (say, at the head of a defending army), he is usually not one for forwarding himself, and that goes doubly for the opposite sex. How would he advance Jayelle, and does he even trust the vague chemistry he has perceived? Could it be that he’s read the situation wrong? The first stage in this Goal would be to pluck up the courage to actually advance. The next, hypothetical goal, would be to know what in the Hells he would do in that situation! Achieveing this Goal is in the first part based on seizing opportunities. For narrative purposes, it is not assumed that he will succeed in gripping these opportunities, and if so, that will be done because it serves the story better. Also – and this is the point about the character and his emotions and doubts, what if his feelings are just confused? What if his attraction to Jayelle is just that she is so different from what he is used to? What if he pursues her and it then turns out that the Hot Ranger Spy chick is really the woman in his life? WHAT THEN?! It will be interesting to see how this is played out, simply because it is contigent on evolving as a narrative naturally, not pre-written one way or the other. And with that in mind…
- Meet the mysterious undercover Ranger woman again
What an intriguing person! Her skill, her sense of the dramatic, her obvious capabilities – - is it any wonder Feredir is bemused by her? Obviously, it is impossible to tell if there is “anything there”, but Feredir would grab any opportunity of meeting her again. Maybe HER attentions become his next Major Personal Goal?
|Major Personal Goals|
- Keep Eriador safe
An impossible task. This could only be construed as accomplishes in the event of helping to vanquish the Enemy.
- Protect the Line of Kings
Another impossible task; only with Aragorn on the Throne of Arnor and Gondor would this task be fulfilled.
- Learn the Magic of the Elves
The Elves are reticent about teaching Feredir magic because the respected (and pitied) Tauron expressly forbid it. Several among the Elves, not as principally inclined as Men due to their flighty nature, would probably agree to do so, if they could be persuaded in the right manner. For Feredir to come to that step, he would have had to fulfill the Minor Goals related to this first.
- Serve in the Grey Company alongside Aragorn – his life-goal
The greatest honour; joining Aragorn’s Band of Brothers in the elite Grey Company. Any Ranger’s dream.
